How Windows works at Hetzner
On dedicated servers, Hetzner sells Windows Server as an add-on. According to Hetzner's documentation for Windows Server 2025, you order the add-on in the Robot panel, the installation then runs automatically, and you get an email when it is done. After that you connect with a Remote Desktop client as Administrator, using the password you chose when ordering. Hetzner's page for Windows Server 2022 is marked as deprecated for new orders (checked 2026-10-24).
Windows on Hetzner Cloud
Hetzner Cloud is different. In its Cloud FAQ, Hetzner says it does not support Windows ISOs, so you cannot bring your own installer. It also says the Windows EULA forbids Windows 10 and 11 on servers and that Hetzner does not provide those ISO files; the alternative it points to is Windows Server editions. We solve this differently. Our CX plans come in two forms: Linux runs on Hetzner Cloud, and Windows runs on our own Hyper-V virtual machines based on Hetzner bare-metal servers and network. Because we run that virtualization ourselves, we can install Windows Server on it.
What you handle yourself at Hetzner
Even when Windows is installed, Hetzner's documentation lists things you deal with on your own:
- First login. Windows asks you to change the initial password, and the first login does not allow network level authentication.
- Account lockout. A Windows Server update locks the built-in Administrator after 10 failed password attempts in 10 minutes. Hetzner notes that brute-force attempts are common on its static IP blocks and describes how to unlock and change this setting.
- Windows Update. For technical reasons it is set to download updates only; installing them needs a registry change.
- Extra users. Additional Remote Desktop licenses are ordered through a support request.
None of this is difficult for an administrator, but it is work, and every mistake costs time.

- You choose a server and pay. Pick a CX plan or an auction server and pay by card or crypto.
- We prepare the server. For an auction server we order the dedicated server; for a CX plan we create your virtual machine on our Hyper-V hosts. Then we install Windows Server 2022.
- We set up Remote Desktop. Access works from Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android.
- You get the login. IP address and Administrator login, usually in about 15 minutes for Cloud CX and about 1 hour for auction servers.
- We keep watching. Monitoring is included, and you can ask us for help in WhatsApp or Telegram.

Which server to choose
- CX plans: the easy start. Linux on Hetzner Cloud or Windows on our Hyper-V machines based on Hetzner bare-metal, usually ready in about 15 minutes.
- Server Auction: a whole physical server with Windows installed, usually ready in about 1 hour. Falkenstein and Helsinki. More about auction servers with Windows.
- Cloud CPX: Linux only. If you need Windows, choose CX or an auction server.
FAQ
Can I run Windows on a Hetzner server?
Yes on dedicated servers: Hetzner offers Windows Server as a paid add-on you order in its Robot panel. On Hetzner Cloud, Hetzner says it does not support Windows ISOs, so you cannot install Windows there yourself. With Winservers.NET you do not have to deal with either: we install Windows for you, on auction servers and on our CX plans.
Which Windows do you install?
Windows Server 2022 (Evaluation edition), with Remote Desktop set up. For long-term use a Windows license is required; ask us if you have questions.
Can I install Windows 10 or 11 on a Hetzner server?
No. Hetzner's FAQ says the Windows EULA forbids using Windows 10 or 11 as server software or for remote access, and that Hetzner does not provide Windows 10/11 ISO files. Use Windows Server instead.
How fast is it ready?
Cloud CX servers are usually ready in about 15 minutes after payment, auction dedicated servers in about 1 hour. You get the IP address and the Remote Desktop login.
What do I have to do?
Choose a server, pay by card or crypto and log in with Remote Desktop. We order the server, install Windows and set up access.
Which plans can run Windows?
CX plans (Windows or Linux) and Server Auction dedicated servers (Windows). With Windows, CX plans run on our own Hyper-V virtual machines based on Hetzner bare-metal servers, which is why we can install Windows on them; with Linux they run on Hetzner Cloud. Cloud CPX plans are Linux only.
Is monitoring included?
Yes. We watch the server and let you know when something is wrong.
Can I get a refund?
No. Payments are not refundable and the setup fee is not refunded. The minimum payment is 1 month. Mandatory consumer rights under the law remain unchanged.
